Central Park

Central Park is basically the center of New York City.  There is a zoo, ice skating rink, volleyball courts, soccer fields, and many other activities.  I personally have been to the zoo with my cousins, and it was awesome.  There were so many animals and it was really nice.  The ice skating rink is only there in the winter, but I have not been skating on it yet.  It is a nice place to go biking or take a walk.

I would highly suggest going to Central Park in the summer, but it is also very nice in the winter.  Stop in when your in New York!

Saks Fifth Avenue!

On my most recent trip to NYC, one of my favorite parts was visiting Saks Fifth Avenue.  As one of the most popular and visited stores in New York, it did not disapoint.  It’s 10 floors are filled with all types of clothes, jewlery, accesories, kitchen ware, and my personal favorite, shoes.  This single store is home to over 10,000 pairs of every type of shoes imaginable!  It has running shoes, high heels, boots, sandels, ballet flats, and many more.  Saks is the most amazing and largest store that I have ever been in.  The shoe level is a must see in New York City!

9/11 Memorial

When I went to NYC over Christmas break,  one of the things we did was visit the 9/11 Memorial.  Located on Ground Zero, it opened on the 10 year anniversery of 9/11.

Even though it was free to get in, we had to make reservations about a week in advance.  When we arrived, we presented our tickets at least five times at different security checkpoints.  It was like we were at the ariport because we had to go throught metal detectors and take off our shoes and coats.

The memorial itself is a huge outside area filled with trees and benches, as well as the two reflecting pools.  The reflecting pools are roughly the perimeter of the World Trade Center buildings.  Both pools have waterfalls pouring down both sides.  Around the outside of the pools, all the names of those who died are listed.  Those who died in the South Tower names are engraved on that pool, and the same for the North Tower.  The names of the firefighters, rescue team members, and those on the planes are also remembered on the pools.

The atmosphere of the memorial is very quiet and somber.  It was especially sad for my grandpa, who worked and knew many of the people who died in the South Tower.

If you ever find yourself near Ground Zero, I reccomend going to see the memorial.  It is very well done and is a beautiful way to remember those who died on 9/11.

Wicked

All Broadway plays are amazing, but my all time favorite was Wicked.  It opened in Fall of 2003, and I saw it in the summer of 2004.  I saw the original cast, who were amazing.  Kristin Chenoweth played Glinda the Good Witch, Idina Menzel played  Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West, and Joel Grey played  The Wizard.

Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, and takes place while Glinda and Elphaba are in school at Shiz University.  They become friends, even though Glinda is the popular blonde, and Elphaba is the outcast because of her apearence.  This play sets the tone and background for The Wizard of Oz, and explains why Glinda and Elphaba do not get along.

The story line in Wicked as fantastic, but the props and effects are better.  All sets on Broadway have huge backdrops and stages, but of all the plays I’ve seen, Wicked is the most impressive.  My personal favorite is the flying monkeys who come from the top of the stage.  The costumes are so well done and fit the play perfectly.  There is so much to look at, it takes the whole play just to take it all in!

I would recomend Wicked to all Wizard of Oz lovers, and Broadway lovers alike!

The food in New York is way better than the food in California.  They have so many more options than California, and it tastes better too!  The Best things are……

1. The Pizza

Image Detail  The pizza has flat crust and thin layers of cheese and crust.  They best way to eat NY pizza is with only cheese!!

2. Cannoli’s

Cannoli’s are the best thing in New York and are mostly found on the East Coast.  They are a fantastic dessert that are very sweet.  They are filled with sweetened ricotta cheese and chocolate chips, and then put into a shell.  There are many different flavors but my favorite is the original!

There are so many different choices for food and resturants in New York that I can’t write about them all!  But these are my two favorites and I enjoy them every time that I visit.

The best things about New York at Christmastime are…

  • The Decorations– Everything in the city is lit up and all of the windows are decorated with different themes.  The Empire State Building is covered in red and green lights!
  • Rockefeller Center–  The ice skating rink is amazing and music is always playing.  The tree is gigantic and covered with ornaments and lights!
  • The Atmosphere–  NYC’s atmosphere might be the best part about Christmas in the city.   Everywhere you look is decorated for the holidays!
